Paralympic Qualifying Meet to Take Place at Campus Recreation Center May 19-20
The 9th-Annual Disability Open, a Paralympic qualifying meet, will feature 175 swimmers from 14 countries who are trying to qualify for the 2012 Paralympic Games in London.
The Disability Open is hosted by the Greater Toledo Aquatic Club (GTAC) and UC Campus Recreation, in collaboration with U.S. Paralympics, and will take place May 19-20 at UC’s Keating Aquatic Center in the Campus Recreation Center Aquatic Complex. There will be morning sessions beginning at 9 a.m. on Saturday, May 19, and Sunday, May 20, as well as an afternoon session at 5 p.m. on Saturday. All sessions are free and open to the public.
“We are delighted to be able to have some of the best Paralympians in the world competing at this meet,” says GTAC Head Coach Keith Kennedy, an alumnus of UC, who started the meet nine years ago. “Just as impressive, are the numbers of new swimmers who compete each year. It’s great to host this at my alma mater and to know that UC will once again give a great welcome to all of our swimmers.”
The Disability Open, which is the last qualifying meet before the 2012 Paralympics, was created to encourage swimmers with disabilities to compete in the Paralympic movement. Competition is very keen, and many swimmers who started out at the GTAC meet have gone on to join their countries’ elite swimming ranks.
